Co-founders Barbie Gazdik, Peter Mars, and James Turk opened Mars Gallery in 1988, carving out a home in a 19th century all-brick timber loft on Fulton Market in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. While other commercial businesses filled the streets by day, artists and creatives began to set up shop, creating a vibrant community and a legendary nightlife scene.
Mars Gallery became home to a weird and wonderful variety of art and artists, including contemporary, modern pop art, abstract, figurative and more. Customers looked to the gallery not just for fine art, but also for custom framing services, professional art installation, a silkscreen studio, and an events space.
During the early years, flanked by warehouses and the meat packing district, Mars Gallery became as well known for its late-night parties as it was for its idiosyncratic artwork. The West Loop evolved into one of Chicago’s trendiest neighborhoods, but Mars Gallery retained its unconventional flair. (Its elevator bar was one of the West Side’s coolest places to grab a cocktail.)
Today, the West Loop is utterly transformed from the early days of Mars Gallery. In 2019, owner Barbie Gazdik closed the gallery’s physical location, creating this online space to showcase Peter Mars’ artwork.
